SXO

What Is the Purpose of SXO?

SXO can be defined as the set of techniques for optimizing user experience on search engines. SXO is a concept created by SEOmoz, but it’s been used plenty in the industry already. The benefit of the acronym is to remind you that for an SEO strategy to be optimal, user experience are one of the most important criteria to consider. When a user performs a search and clicks on a result, he does so because he trusts this page will bring him relevant information / help him answer his question more precisely than other pages on the web could do. Optimizing for Google’s algorithm can only get you so far if user experience isn’t good enough to meet users’ expectations.

What are SXO techniques?

SXO techniques consist mostly of optimizing for user experience. As an example, think about the page layout on a search engine results page (SERP). A good SXO strategy would be to have your most important content above-the-fold so that users have a good first impression of what they can find on your site. The SXO mind-set is also present when you’re thinking about organic visibility and whether it will bring real benefits to your business.

Why should I use SXO techniques?

SXO is all about making things work better for everyone: users choose relevant pages, Google rewards them with higher rankings and website owners get qualified traffic who convert well (or at least make them money through ads).

Keeping SXO in mind is especially important when designing for mobile devices (responsive design, SXO interaction, SXO display) [this sentence could also be written better]. On mobile devices, content above-the-fold is even more valuable than on desktop because users tend to look at just the first couple of results. Optimizing for user experience helps you build trust with users and get them to your website.

The SXO mind-set can also help you see things from your customers’ perspective. It’s easy to forget about the daily struggles of people who ask themselves questions like “What should I eat?”, “Where should I go tomorrow night?” or “How can I find a good yoga trainer near me?” Having SXO in mind helps you optimize your business for what customers need, not simply what Google wants.

What SXO tools do you recommend?

SXO isn’t only about the concepts, it’s all about execution. For a SXO strategy to be effective, you need to have good analysis and optimization tools at hand [sentence doesn’t make sense].
